For long, with stores closed, streets deserted, and shooting off fireworks within the outer ring of Shanghai banned since 2016, the Spring Festival seems somewhat bleak and cheerless for me.

However, this year, to fight against the coronavirus pandemic, many migrant workers are encouraged to stay where they are during the festival holidays, which adds to the jollification of the Spring Festival in Shanghai.

As a tradition, many Shanghainese go to the Yu Garden and the City God Temple during the Spring Festival. As one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Shanghai, the Yu Garden holds plenty of lantern shows every Spring Festival. Despite the myriad tourists, the mere sight of the fabulous neon lights and the imposing shining lanterns made into shapes of oxen makes the efforts well worthy.

As for my family, a well-kept tradition is pasting Spring Festival couplets. As I’ve been practising calligraphy since I was five years old, writing couplets on the day before New Year’s Eve (also known as “Da Nian Ye” in Mandarin) and sending them to my relatives have been a routine and a pleasure as well. Since it’s the year of Ox this year, the couplets I wrote began with the Chinese character “牛”, which means “ox”.

Besides pasting couplets, posting a “福” up side down is also a well-preserved tradition, as in Mandarin, “Up-side-down” shares the same pronunciation with “arrival”. For this year, I’ve designed a special “Up-side-down Blessing”, which is made up of two characters - “longevity” and “blessing” (“寿” and “福” in Mandarin). As my grandmother is going to celebrate her 70th birthday in 2021, I deem it proper to send this special “Up-side-down Blessing” to her.
